Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies mowers ?

Postby falstaff » Mon Mar 05, 2012 4:48 pm

I recently picked up a bunch of fims from the 1960s about Ramsomes, Sims & Jefferies ltd, of Ipswitch, England. Several of the films show a wide variety of lawn mowers for residential use and I would love to have one. Did Ransomes sell residential mowers in the USA? I know they sold commercial equipment in the USA, which was distributed through Hahn (Hahn also distrbuted equipment in the UK through Ransomes). If they didn't sell them in the USA did they sell them in Canada? They made some rotary mowers too, but they don't have the neat look that the reel mowers have.

hello falstaf. i have two ransomes marquis cyclinder mowers. one is a 1963 model 2 A with a clinton 400 engine which was fitted as standard . also have a marquis with the f12 sloper engine on made in 1969.this later machine is the best known one with its iconic engine. i can get one for you if you really want one. i am desperatly looking for a clinton gem gas tank cap. the diameter of filler neck is 4 cms,all our tanks have smaller necks so i have no hope of getting one here thanks john webster U.K

I would want one with the sloper engine. The smaller the better as far as the mower goes. I like the "Gazelle" model and think that would be a nice one to have. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of old Ransomes mowers on ebay.co.uk, but nobody wants to ship them to the USA, or anywhere else. Part of the reason I want to go small is that it will likely be less costly to ship. I don't even know how to or how much shipping a mower would be.

I will be up near York (Thorton le Dale) all next week (June 30- July 7) so maybe I'll run across one. If I do I can store it at my friend's house until I can figure out shipping. What does that filler cap look like? I might be able to find one.
